Known as "Moorish bath" (referring to Muslim Spain: Andalus) and Turkish Bath by Westerners, the hammam ( "hot water" in Arabic) is a steam bath which belongs to the same ancient roman bathing practices of purifying baths, from which the sauna also derives.
In its current form, the hammam was created in the Ottoman Empire, countries of the Maghreb to the Middle-East (Syria) through the expansion of Islam. The hammam (turkish bath) was in fact adapted to fit the precepts of the Islam religion, which commands that its followers adhere to a strict set of hygiene rules before prayer rituals.
